Is riding a bike dangerous for Daral Vining
Well, for most of us we begin riding a bike at the age of 5-6 and then there is the old saying it’s like riding a bike you never forget.
I really began riding in 2005 and on my first ride out with SUPERSTAR (and nickname author) Barry Taerbaum. Barry made clear to me there are two types of cyclists those that have gone down and those that will go down.
Now I am not saying it’s Barry’s fault but in 2005 I had four significant crashes. I describe significant if I go through a helmet and in 2005 I went through 4 helmets. I still have road rash scares from 3 years ago and I kept the helmets for my own perverse collection.
This past week I had lunch with Rob Kelley (who I believe went to WORLDS in mountain biking) And Rob had open scars obviously from a recent crash. It seems as he was standing up to gain extra power when his chain broke leaving him looking up at the sky in the middle of one of Chicago busiest roads.
Well, last week goes to Daral Vining who was out for a ride with Sue Dziuban (aka married to Brad Pitt). Daral was crossing the railroad tracks at a slow pace when his wheel got stuck sending Daral to the ground. Daral is in obvious pain so Sue called 911 who immediately called to make sure no trains were coming down the tracks. Daral ended up breaking the top of his femur and underwent surgery 2 days later.
Now there are some questions as to wheter or not is was Sue’s fault for this accident. However the moral of the story as Barry explained to me 3 years ago. There are two types of riders those that have gone down and those that are going down.
I skipped comments regarding the Racine Half Iron
So there is a race I recently did in Racine WI. I believe there was 40 people from Mulit Sport Madness who particiapted in this race of 1800-2,000 participants. The fog was very think I believe visibility was 50 feet and the water temperature was 55degrees. Even in a full wet suit this is still very chilly water. I was anticipating a 45 minute swim. If you recall I stated I swim well for a rock and this is 1.2Miles in Lake Michigan. I was happy to see my time out of the water was 33 minutes. I felt pretty sure I would have a decent bike and I wanted to average 20mph. Well, This went a bit better I averaged 21.5 mph. I was able to catch a few people I know who got out of the water before me but more importantly for me Lindsay Zucco (wife to Adam aka Head of Training Bible) caught up to me on the bike at exactly 28miles. We chatted for a bit and at any moment I was expecting Lindsay just to leave me in a cloud of dust (she is a very strong athlete) Well I told her I had to get going because I wanted to race this in negative splits so I took off but in the back of my mind I was always waiting for Lindsay to pass me. Ends up she was just a few seconds off behind me. My Bike leg was 2hours 36 this was a record pace for me. On the run is when you get to see the family and friends out there supporting you. My wife was out of the country working on projects for our company PADMA’s Plantation however all three of my children were there cheering me on. My run was not as strong as it should have been. I ran a half marathon or 13.6 miles in 2:06 really I should have been 10-15minutes faster on the run. My overall time was 5:25 which is 1hour and 11minutes faster then my first half ironman.
Saturday 8-9-08 typical Weekend
This Saturday four of us, ALASKA MIKE , JASON the Marine, Jim the sprinkler will all meet at the Corporate Office of Padma’s Plantation at 445am. (Yep this means I will get up around 330am) We will then Drive 2hours to Madison WI. for a 112 mile bike or approx 7 hours sitting on the bike. The reason will will go to Madison is 2 fold. 1) Mike and Jason are doing the Ironman there this September 2) Madison is mountainous compared to Chicago Il. SO to be very honest I hate this course it is truly a difficult ride. Once we are done biking we will run anywhere up to an hour. Then back in the car for the 2 hours home. That makes for a long day.
Typical Day
Ok I need to give you some details on the people I train with as well as provide you with a sample day of training. First I am a member of (MSM)Multi Sport Madness which is a triathlon club. (as a quick side note there is a MSMKIDS which has world and national champions on their team, It is always very humbling when you get passed on your bike by a 14 year old. Keith Dickson is the director of the club and has produced some excellent athletes.) OK back to MSM, Danny Delgado is the president (aka Del Taco) excellent elite athlete he has built the club to 100 members. Then there is Andy Wellman (aka Powder) all of these people that I am naming here are much faster than I am. Jim Vidmich (aka …) Jim is only a roadie but anytime you need to ride for 7 hours he will go with you. Adam Zucco (aka the head coach of Training Bible), Mark and Sue Dziuban (no aka) Carla Hastert(aka MY COACH) and about 10 others that I am constantly training with Michelle (aka LOLA , weather girl) Ryan (aka Sam Adams) Jason (aka Marine bad ass) DR Ted (aka cannot diclose in this forum). Anyhow my average morning I will rise by 4 am I always enjoy coffee prior to a workout. Every wednesday we do a 25 mile bike ride at 515am on any given morning there will be 15-25 people riding. We will do an easy 5 mile warmup then a 14 mile time trial. The time trial is basically riding as hard as you can with the goal of making the second half stronger than the first half. Personally I will fall towards the middle of the pack ( I have been getting closer to the front) and my average speed on this will be 23mph for the 14 miles. After the bike sometimes Coach Carla, just to cause more pain will have me run for 20 or 30 minutes. If Danny says lets do coffee sometimes I will skip the run. Then it is off to home to help with Kids, get ready for work and breakfast!!. I get to work by 9 and then I leave at 11am for a 1130 to 1215 swim. My swimming is pretty good COMPARED TO A ROCK!!!!!!!!!!!! Then for the most part I am done till Thursday. So Wednesday is a little bit light with only 2 hours and 15 minutes of training or slightly more if COACH CARLA is in a bad mood
LESS than 90 days
Ok people here we go. NOV 23rd I will roll across the finish line all for THE BRIGHTSIDE OF THE ROAD!!!!!! My goal is under 12 hours and to raise 25,000 for this cause. I will update the blog 3-4 times per week
